From darkness to light, from west to east: The season's final concert invites you on a multifaceted journey. Alongside Thomas Nidecker's world premiere, two more recent masterpieces are on the program. One of them is "Black Trees" by Sarah Nemtsov: "It's a nocturne," says the German composer. Commissioned as part of the Beethoven Year 2020, she approached Ludwig van Beethoven in an unusual way: through the idea of stacked, sculptural layers of paint, a painting by her mother, the artist Elisabeth Naomi Reuter, and poems by Sylvia Plath. Due to the COVID pandemic and the resulting cancellation of the premiere, the work was somewhat forgotten. In 2025, it was revived with several performances, and not only the composer is delighted that it is now making its way to Basel under the baton of guest conductor Jonathan Stockhammer.

Thierry Pécou's "Cara Bali Concerto" from 2020–21 for piano and orchestra takes the listener on a sonic journey to the East. Pécou's enthusiasm for the musical traditions of Southeast Asia and Gamelan music is evident, and he evokes their mechanics and musical complexity in his piece.

A special highlight: The soloist is pianist Alexandre Tharaud, a “faithful companion” of Pécous, who already performed the world premiere of the work with the Orchestre National de Lyon.

The centerpiece of the program between Pécou and Nemtsov is the new composition by Thomas Nidecker. As a founding member of the Basel Sinfonietta, this Basel-based musician is a defining figure in the orchestra's history and in the development of local cultural life. The Basel Sinfonietta's season finale thus takes the audience on a journey to distant lands – while simultaneously celebrating its own history close to home.
