MUSICAL BORDERLINES WITH THE BASEL SINFONIETTA AND BALDUR BRÖNNIMANN
The Basel Sinfonietta has set itself the goal of transcending local and musical boundaries for the 2022/23 season – with cutting-edge music for large orchestra. The Basel Sinfonietta's strong contemporary profile is recognized both nationally and internationally: the orchestra will perform at major music centers and festivals for contemporary music in the coming season. The 2022/23 season is the final season for Principal Conductor Baldur Brönnimann, who has shaped the orchestra into a first-class ensemble for contemporary music.
“If classical music needs anything, it’s a sense of adventure,” states Baldur Brönnimann, Principal Conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta, unequivocally. “That’s why the music of the Basel Sinfonietta begins where it ends for many others, namely in the 20th and 21st centuries. We see our mission as bringing the most sought-after composers and their finest orchestral works to Basel. For us, a connection to the present isn’t just a word, it’s a given.”
In the six subscription concerts of the 2022/23 season, the Basel Sinfonietta will present its audience with nine premieres – world premieres commissioned by the Basel Sinfonietta and Swiss premieres. In addition to the Stadtcasino Basel, the Museum Tinguely and – across the Swiss border – the Burghof Lörrach (Germany) will be added as new subscription venues.
Alongside modern classics, the program features world premieres by Anna Sowa (born 1987), Asia Ahmetjanova (born 1992), Mauro Hertig (born 1989), and Michael Pelzel (born 1978), as well as national premieres by Julian Anderson (born 1967), Simon Steen-Andersen (born 1976), Louis Andriessen (1939–2021), Oscar Bianchi (born 1975), Ashley Fure (born 1982), Yiqing Zhu (born 1989), and George Lewis (born 1952).
In addition to the ongoing collaboration with Principal Conductor Baldur Brönnimann, conductor Jessica Cottis makes her debut with the Basel Sinfonietta. Furthermore, the orchestra continues its collaborations with conductors Pablo Rus Broseta and Peter Rundel.
The Basel Sinfonietta will feature outstanding soloists from the contemporary music scene, including Ilse Eerens (soprano), Nicolas Hodges (piano), Carolin Widmann (violin) and Boglarka Pecze (clarinet), in the coming season.
Furthermore, the Basel Sinfonietta can present itself both nationally and internationally with guest performances at the Basel Composition Competition and the Festival Archipel in Geneva, as well as at the Acht Brücken Festival in Cologne and in renowned Belgian music centers in Antwerp and Ghent.
The 2022/23 season is also the last for long-serving Principal Conductor Baldur Brönnimann, without whom the orchestra would not be where it is today. "As a top-class musician and compelling communicator, Baldur has won over many listeners in and far beyond Basel to contemporary music and inspired them with enthusiasm for the Basel Sinfonietta," says Daniela Martin, Managing Director of the Basel Sinfonietta. "He has the full recognition of the orchestra, and I personally extend my heartfelt thanks for this invaluable collaboration."
