The Basel Sinfonietta is back in the future and launches its anniversary season «40+1» with three big names in contemporary music.
With Lontano , the orchestra alludes to the pandemic era characterized by social distancing. The work has been used in films by Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese to create an eerie atmosphere.
The centerpiece of the concert is the performance of Rudolf Kelterborn's fourth symphony, a tribute to the recently deceased Swiss composer, whose music the Basel Sinfonietta had previously presented in distant Azerbaijan.
Unsuk Chin's piano concerto, being performed in its Swiss premiere with Finnish soloist Joonas Ahonen, emphasizes vitality, motor skills, and virtuosity. The four-movement work by the South Korean composer, a student of Ligeti, highlights the playful side of the piano.
