Anne Haug, Antú Romero Nunes and Lucien Haug, based on motifs from the Krabat legend
The mill of Saint Pain
A Western noir featuring the Basel Sinfonietta
They say music heals. Theater Basel, with the Basel Sinfonietta, conjures an entire orchestra from the underworld. In this new adaptation of the well-known Sorbian legend, Krabat has taken his own life. With one reason: the whole family should be together one last time. And so the siblings gather for a bizarre and curious funeral. The memory of their shared childhood, of Krabat, their deceased mother, and their father cannot be suppressed. It awakens an old song that their mother, Kantorka, used to sing again and again. The sound of the past transports the siblings back to their childhood and the repressed magical history of their family. For only one thing truly held them all together back then: this one melody.
For the first time, Antú Romero Nunes and his team are dedicating themselves to the genre of theatrical opera: Together with the author Anne Haug and the author Lucien Haug, the composer Anna Bauer and a stage by Matthias Koch, in which a Tinguely machine is integrated, they retell the legend of Krabat as a family story.
