The Basel Sinfonietta and Principal Conductor Titus Engel are extending their collaboration until 2031.
Following three highly successful seasons with Titus Engel as Principal Conductor, the Basel Sinfonietta is delighted to announce the extension of his contract. Titus Engel will remain Principal Conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta; the contract extension runs until the end of the 2030/31 season.
Since taking office in 2023, Titus Engel has significantly shaped the orchestra's artistic direction and led it to great success. This includes acclaimed guest appearances at renowned concert halls and major festivals for contemporary music – such as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Witten Days for New Chamber Music, and the NOW! Festival at the Philharmonie Essen. The orchestra's recent Naxos recording of works by Sofia Gubaidulina also garnered international attention, being hailed by the New York Times as one of the best classical albums of 2025. The contract extension ensures the Basel Sinfonietta's continued ability to perform contemporary music at the highest level.
“I am very much looking forward to another five years of collaboration with these magnificent musicians, who have become very dear to me,” said Titus Engel about the contract extension. “The Basel Sinfonietta is a unique orchestra that is always ready to explore boundaries and discover new things with great energy and precision, and therefore it is a perfect fit for me.”
